Project Overview

It had been identified by Gatwick Airport Ltd (GAL) that the aircraft pavement within taxiway blocks 33N, 40N, 41N and 42N has fallen below the required standard and was therefore in need of rehabilitation. The Taxiway Rehabilitation comprised of two elements, those being Pavement Rehabilitation works and Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) works. The works were concentrated in taxiway blocks 39N, 33N, 40N, 41N and 42N with a required 15 year minimum design life of the pavement.

Brenwal’s contracted pavement works comprised of breaking out the existing PQ concrete and lean mix concrete down to a depth of 900mm below the existing ground level. When formation was reached Brenwal then installed 550mm thk of dry lean mix concrete, compacted in layers ready for the finished tarmac surface to be laid.

In addition, the existing drainage was upgraded to account for the extra capacity required to ensure the latest design regulations were met. This entailed installing 130m of Charcon drainage channel to the northern edge of the taxiway and 120m of Gatic slot drain to the southern edge of the taxiway.

The AGL works consisted of installing 150m of 4 way 150mm diameter primary cable ducting with 6No pre cast concrete ‘E’ chambers. Installing secondary ducting into existing chambers and extending stop bar ducting.

The works were very challenging due to a number of factors; works being completed on shift patterns working 24/7, access to the site was through GAL’s strict security regime and working airside ensuring all works did not affect daily operations on the busiest single runway in the world. All the works were completed within time and on budget to the satisfaction of the client and main contractor who were impressed with Brenwal’s quality, management and output of work.
